II. Frozen Section Service

Responsibilities
Review OR schedule and obtain essential clinical history of potential FS cases in advance.
Pick up specimen and correct requisition form from OR when you are paged or otherwise notified.
Determine what type of information the surgeon hopes to gain from the FS.
Collate clinical information with the
request
of the surgeon.
Intraoperative specimen gross description
in writing

Supervise and assist PA (if there is one) in frozen section.
Review case with attending pathologist on FS service.
Make sure that all frozen section slides and all frozen section remnants are properly labeled and processed.
Open, pin to a board, and immerse in formalin any large specimens.
Sequence of Actions
The day before surgery:
Obtain and review OR schedule.
Look up pertinent clinical history of potential FS cases in the computer.
Print out or note down important clinical information for potential FS cases.
Pull out pertinent and representative slides of patient

s previous pathology for potential FS cases.
Frozen section day:
1. Pick up specimen in OR, and request of the surgeon the following:
Essential history, if not on the requisition form.
Specific requests of surgeon (margin, diagnosis, gross only, culture, etc.).
Prepare the specimen (measure, ink, open, etc.)
Supervise and oversee FS process by PA.
Review FS slides and prepare the intraoperative diagnostic report with attending pathologist.
Bring FS report to OR and inform the surgeon about the diagnosis.
Make sure that all slides and FS remnants are correctly labeled and organized.
