Risk Assessment of Primary Gastrointestinal Stromal Tumor (GIST)
* Note:
Criteria for mitotic figure: 1) absence of nuclear membrane, 2) chromosomal (radiating) alignment, and 3) intracytoplasmic.
The mitotic rate is based on per 5 mm2 on the histologic tissue section on glass slide. In most new microscopes, this
approximately is 21 hpf . Below is the calculation.
Diameter of view field (mm) = 22 / 40 = 0.55, where 22 is the field number of eyepiece, and 40 = objective mag.
Area of view at 40x (mm2) = Pi x R2 = 3.1416 x (0.55/2)2 = 0.23758294793 mm
Number of fields to be 5 mm2 = 5 / 0.23758294793 = 21 fields (at 40 X)
