An innovative Reporting Method

Use 2D barcode to generate surgical pathology report -- Create report with 2D barcode

-- Surgical pathologists spend 25% of diagnostic service time to enter diagnoses to pathology report.

-- Diagnostic information can be embedded/stored in 2D barcode, a well-established technology.

-- The diagnosis can be quickly entered into a pathology report by scanning the barcode.

Create re-usable templates on the Web

An Innovative Way to Cope with Frequent Updates -- Create Template on the Web

-- This Web tool lets users to create dynamic Web forms as tumor-reporting templates on the Web.

-- The Web forms/templates can be saved to a local computer and used  in the future.

-- No IT skills are required; you can update cancer protocols or reporting requirements in your Web forms.

-- You can use the templates to report pathologic findings (final pathology report) on the Web!

-- Samples are provided to facilitate form-creating process.

Facilitates structured tumor reporting

Structured Tumor Reporting in Pathology -- Tumor Reporting

-- This web tool takes less than 25% of the time to create a tumor synoptic report than dictating the report.

-- It has been updated to comply with 8th ed. AJCC Cancer Staging schema.

--  Structured tumor reporting is mandated by The American College of Surgeons Commission on Cancer [ACS-CoC].

-- By ACS-CoC Standard, all cancer centers must use structured tumor  pathology reporting  for their accreditation.

-- The system has been used by many pathology labs / institutions in the last ten years.

A report of  the design and implementation of this reporting system is published in American Journal of Clinical Pathology.   Click the hyperlinks above or  navigation tabs in the top menu to access.   (Read more …)

 Provides instruction on specimen examination

Provides Guides for Gross Specimen Examination -- e-Grossing Manual

Pathology diagnosis begins with specimen handling. Systematic examination and adequate sampling (i.e., "gross examination") are key determinants in correct and accurate diagnosis.  Gross examination follows a set of rules and is a complex task.  The "e-Gross Exam Manual" contains practical guidelines and specific information for the task. It is designed for use at the grossing station, ideally with touch-on computer screen. A validation and outcome report of its application is published in Human Pathology. Using such a well-formulated grossing manual can minimize unnecessary tissue sampling, avoid delay in case management, help resolve disagreements and enhance productivity. (Read more … )

Guides to formulate diagnoses in report

Helps Formulate Final Diagnosis -- Diagnosis Wording

How often are you asked by clinicians to clarify your meticulously prepared pathology report? What are sciences behind good pathology reporting?  A correct diagnosis inadequately or incorrectly conveyed can be as dangerous and harmful as a wrong diagnosis. The goal of the Dx. Wording is to introduce relatively uniform guidelines for generating pathology reports that are concise, accurate, easy to read and understand, with acceptable data interoperability, and can be easily retrieved electronically for data mining. The skill to formulate diagnoses seems largely neglected in scholarly publications and not adequately emphasized in our training. Most pathologists formulate reports largely in institutional and personal styles and with anecdotal experiences.  (Read more …)

Helps quantify diagnostic abnormality

Assists in Quantifying Diseases -- Grading & Scoring Schemas Can you remember how to grade Celiac sprue by Marsch-Oberhuber classification or risk stratification of a GIST in the small intestine or the percentile of a placental disc weight for gestational age?  How do you keep your references for easy access? Clinical management of a disease almost always influenced by its quantitative features since the quantitative attribute often determines the clinical course of the disease (i.e. prognosis). There are over a hundred of different staging and grading schemas that are used in pathology. However, managing a large number of grading / scoring schemata in conventional book-note format is difficult. (Read more … )
