A fallopian tube may be received attached to the uterus, attached to the ovary without the uterus, or alone.
Measure the specimen (length and average diameter). Give a separate measurement of the diameter of any dilated area.
Note the presence or absence of the fimbriated end. Determine whether a prior ligation has been performed.
Describe the serosa (color, adhesions, paratubal cyst, nodule, rupture). Describe the composition of any intratubal contents (blood clot, tumor, fluid) and measure as appropriate. Measure the distance of obvious tumor to resection margin(s). Note any areas of wall thickening.
Serially section the tube, leaving the pieces connected by serosa.
Normal-appearing tube: three cross sections from different areas of the tube. Do not submit fimbriae unless abnormal.
Ectopic pregnancy: 3-5 sections of products of conception, clot, and adjacent wall (including rupture site). One section of normal-appearing tube. Submit additional sections if no products of conception are seen on the initial slides.
Representatively sample any abnormalities.
If a tube with tumor has been submitted without the uterus, submit the proximal (and distal, if applicable) resection margin(s) en face.
Request that normal tube sections be embedded and cut on end.

Received without fixative/in formalin, labeled _____ and “_____”, is a __ cm long segment of fallopian tube with the fimbriated end. The diameter ranges from __ cm at the proximal end to __ cm in the mid portion. The serosa is red-pink, with a __ cm ruptured area in the dilated mid region. There is a __ x __ x __ cm intraluminal blood clot underlying the rupture, with associated intramural hemorrhage. No definite products of conception are identified.
