Submission of the placenta for examination is the prerogative of the attending physician but with some widely accepted criteria:
Maternal - Diabetes mellitus
- PIH
- Prematurity: <32 weeks
- Postmaturity: >42weeks
- Reproductive failure: > 1 previous spontaneous abortions, stillbirths, neonatal deaths, premature births
- Oligohydramnios
- Polyhydramnios
- Fever
- Infection
- Substance abuse
- Repetitive bleeding
- Abruptio
- Isoimmunization
